I am back from my most memorable vacation to the beautiful Fairmont Orchid. A long awaited trip that I am so sad is over! We were away for almost two weeks celebrating something very special and soaking up the sun at one of the most spectacular hotels I’ve ever been too.
The Fairmont Orchid is located on the Kohala Coast, a 30 minute drive from the Kona airport. We rented a car($569 CAD through Expedia for 11 days), but a taxi will cost around $80.00 USD. As you arrive at the spectacular oceanfront hotel you’ll be greeted with a friendly ” aloha ” and a Kukui Nut lei. The friendly staff take your luggage before you step into a breathtaking open air lobby that over looks the ocean. I have only ever arrived at night but still have never been disappointed with the breathtaking views and overall feel of the hotel.
We booked our package through West Jet Vacations, and it worked out to basically getting our airfare for free. If you book a room through the hotel, rates can range in price from $300 to $1000 depending on time of year and room type! As well all rooms have a resort fee of $30.00 USD a night that you need to take into consideration!
First things first, we checked in! Check in is always pleasant and fast, they make sure you have all the info you need, along with the location of your room. This trip we stayed in the North side of the hotel, but honestly we have stayed in three rooms all over the hotel and there is not a bad side or view! Although, I do prefer the North side because you see more of the hotel when say walking to the beach or pool. You don’t want to miss the tropical gardens and waterfalls the hotel grounds have to offer.
We took the elevator up to the fifth floor and were pleasantly surprised when we walked through the doors of our new home for the next few days! Our room had a king size bed, an over the top marble bathroom with not only double sinks but two showers, and a private fully furnished lanai. Everything felt luxurious, top of the line and extremely clean! The beds are amazing, very comfy and clean! The Fairmont has put the finest touches in making the room feel like a paradise.
The house keeping staff at this hotel, along with all the service staff are fantastic. Every night they have a turn down service, where they would leave a water on each side of the bed, change towels, replenish the coffee for your in room Keurig, as well as make sure the bed was made and ready for a good night sleep.
One of the reasons we continue to come back to the Orchid is the beach! The silky white sand and beautiful blue water make it the most spectacular destination for a relaxing getaway. The Fairmont has a man-made lagoon that is great for families or people like me, who don’t like the waters to be too wavy or rough. The beach is always well kept and usually not too busy. I like when a beach isn’t too crowded or over taken by locals. I feel more comfortable to do my thing and relax. You can just walk into the water and swim with many colourful fish and turtles. There also is fantastic beach service from the beach bar, right to your seat. Everything can be charged to your room, so no cash needed.
The Fairmont also has a cute little beach shack where you can purchase a pass for $75.00 USD that allows you to take out any of their beach equipment the entire time your there. Paddle boards, snorkel gear, sea kayaks and lots of other fun stuff is available at your command. You also can rent the stuff by the hour if you aren’t planning on being a beach bum every day like us.
The Orchid has a great pool, it is very spacious and great for kids as well as it is open 24/7. The water is warm and clear and you still get a tropical feel due to being surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery. I did find the pool to be a bit more noisy than the beach. For some people that might be okay, personally I want to relax and the pool just didn’t do it for me. Though the pool deck did have very comfortable lounge chairs that I wish were at the beach! Located right beside the pool is Browns deli that has affordable snacks and drinks, otherwise you can order from the food and beverage server just like the beach!
Near the pool is the hot tub in a lush garden area surrounded by a peaceful waterfall . It is very private for those of you wanting a romantic hot tub session, although this did make my mom never want to go in due to the things that she might see… We did spend a few nights relaxing in the tub but found if it was too full, it made you feel awkward because it is not very spacious.
Both the beach and the pool have cabana rentals. You get two lounge chairs that are covered by an adjustable cover and a cooler filled with water and snacks. We rented one of these everyday by the beach. They coast $55.00 USD a day and are well worth it if your planning a day at the water.
As many of you know one of my favourite thing is food and the Orchid spares no expense when it comes to great food! The resort has six restaurants to choose from; sushi, beach side, fine dinning or a breakfast buffet. They have it all and so much more! I can honesty say the Fairmont Orchid has some of the best food I have ever had. Our room included breakfast, and we loved that buffet.
One of the restaurants, Brown’s Deli was a everyday stop for us! They have fresh Kona coffee, cold brew iced tea, and some of the best snacks. We went at least once a day because of the fresh choices and the reasonable prices. One of our favourites was the sticky bun, a must try!
The Fairmont is also located near two shopping centres with more to choose from. If you are needing groceries or snacks for the room, they have a mini mart located a quick free shuttle, a short bike ride (the hotel offers bikes free of charge) or a 15 minute walk away at the Mauna Lani Shops. This shopping centre also has a few choices for dinning if you are wanting other options. The Kings and Queen shops are just a short drive away and have even more options for clothing boutiques, restaurants and everyones favourite ABC store!
Overall the Fairmont offers so much. A beautiful beach, a fantastic spa that offers ocean front massages, Hawaii exclusive treatments, and anything else you would want or need from a spa, fantastic food, clean grounds, and wonderful friendly staff.
