It all started, when I started shopping for a good fashion sandal for work. I wanted something basic, stylish but also comfortable. Not too fancy, not too crazy expensive and something I could, and would actually wear. Well this is where it all started going wrong!
My first struggle is that I live in a town with very little shoe selection. Yes, if I am looking for a basic sneaker or something like that I am sure I could find it here! However a fashion sandal at a good price is not the easiest thing to find in Smithers. So I went on the never-ending search all over the web and found myself three great pairs of sandals all at amazing prices.. a little too good to be true prices!
I have always been a size seven, sure sometimes I can go up or down half a size depending on the style but for the most part a true seven. So what did I order, a seven in all three styles. I was so excited to get these shoes in the mail. I counted down the days and watched that tracking like a hawk! All for them not to fit…
The length nor width wasn’t a problem, but my darn overly high arch wouldn’t allow my feet to even get into the sandals! It’s a disappointing factor that I am slowly learning to get over. My feet have extremely high arches that stop me from almost getting into any shoe. It’s a struggle that is totally real!
So these three shoes were duds. What ever right? Who needs shoes anyway! Well actually I do since I haven’t bought sandals or really any shoe in almost three years!!!! Since I do work in the public, in a fashion boutique, it’s not really acceptable to wear ratty old sandals…. but hey that’s what I have done because of my darn arch and not being able to find anything I like or can fit in!
After these three sandals failed me, I just gave up for awhile. I stopped even looking at shoes and just wore what I had. Until I started wondering what in the world will I wear in Bali… I can’t wear nasty old fashion shoes in Bali! Not only will my feet die but so might the shoes!
This is when I asked you guys on Instagram what your recommendations were. Many of you answered with Birkenstocks, and this is when the next shoe fail happened.
I knew one of the local stores carried Birkenstocks. When you have weird feet like mine trying on shoes seems to work best! I went down, found what sized worked but didn’t buy them because I couldn’t wrap my head around having another pair of black shoes. I’m not a huge black fan and really wanted pink or white, if you didn’t already see that coming… So I went home, looked around and found a pair of white Birkenstocks online. They were basically the exact same as the ones I tried on in the store, well so I thought!
These shoes arrived along with a pair of Keens that I ordered for the trip too! Like always I was so excited, ran home, tried them on and no surprise, my feet couldn’t fit in either pair! The Birkenstocks were seriously the exact same shoe, but my foot couldn’t even get all the way in! Same size, same style but just a different colour. The Keens I could get into but my foot couldn’t stay forward, so I just hung over the back. Not comfortable at all or practical. So here I am back at square one! .
I sent all these shoes back and returned to the local store. I now have a pair of black Birkenstocks and blue Keens. Not the colours I wanted but they fit, I am comfortable and I supported local! So after all this I now have not only one pair of shoes but two, that I will actually wear!
I still haven’t found a fashion sandal, which is a little depressing but I have learned to make other stuff work. I am actually finding myself wearing the Birkenstocks! They seem to be very comfortable, maybe not the cutest but who cares! They will also save me a struggle of looking for boots because I can just add socks and away I go!
