The last seven months have been full of saving, planning, and watching our finances like a hawk! I am a huge believer in always being prepared and having a budget to live off of! Nothing sucks more than having no money, am I right?! So when it came to our upcoming trip to Bali I had everything budgeted, calculated, to what I thought was financially ready…. until these hidden costs started to sneak up on us! So here I am to save the day and prepare you for these hidden costs that no one seems to talk about!
|| Travel Medical Insurance ||
This is a hidden cost that sucks! Travel Medical Insurance is expensive, something you should have and most likely won’t use! Yippe!
When the time came for Kyle and I to purchase our travel insurance we made sure to do some shopping around! At the time I found that BCAA had the least expensive price, and by least expensive I mean $277.75 down the drain!
Our rate was $138.88 CAD each for our whole trip! Since we are going for over 60 days that means it costs more for us than someone going for a casual 2 week holiday. We also got the basic package with no extras and are not stopping in the USA which can add a few bucks to it as well! Just make sure to pick whatever works for you and your trip!
Total Cost for 1 person: $138.88 CAD
|| Shots & Medication ||
Let’s get these expensive extras over with! The end cost of shots and medication was a big pill to swallow… It was something we also needed but had no idea would cost this much!
Hepatitis A shot; $97.95 CAD each plus a fee of $10.00 CAD just to get the shot done! Not only do you have to pay a pretty penny, but you also get a shot in the arm… Win! Win!
Dukoral ( the poop medicine ); $62.99 CAD each for two doses! The most expensive drink I have ever had, but wait the best part was the fizzy raspberry taste…. Yummy!
I also picked up two other prescriptions, one for “Bali Belly” and one for Strep Throat, something I always get! I just thought it’s better to be safe than sorry! However, this extra precaution was an additional $60.00 CAD, that you might not need!
Total Cost For One Person: $170.00 CAD ( +$60.00 if you want extra prescriptions )
|| International Driver Licence ||
Renting a scooter or driving a motor vehicle? If so, this is something you might want to look into getting! It’s easy and not too pricey for the time and money it could save you while traveling!
All you do is get a passport photo ( $15.00 CAD ), print out the form from BCAA, and mail it out! Make sure this is something you don’t leave until the last minute because it can take up to a month to get back!
Total Cost For One Person: $15.00 + $25.00 = $40.00 CAD
|| Extended Stay Visa ||
Something you might not need if you are visiting Bali for less than 30 days! If you are like us and staying for more than 30 days you will need to apply for an extended stay visa that will cost you $65.00 CAD each!
Simply grab your passport, fill out the paperwork and hope to god you get accepted! Just kidding, I think almost everyone can get one of these visas as long as you don’t have any kind of criminal record!
The hidden cost here is that you will need a passport photo ($15.00) along with two shipping envelopes! One envelope to send it there, and one for them to send it back! Since you do this step 30 days prior to your departure date, going with fast shipping envelopes is the smartest option but it also means adding an extra $40 – $100 depending on what prepaid envelopes you go with!
Total Cost For One Person: $120.00 CAD
Phew, thank goodness that’s all over with! In no way do I want these hidden expenses to scare you! I want them to prepare you for a fun, safe, and financially planned trip! No one wants to plan a dream trip, save up for months, and last minute have no money because of hidden costs!
Total Hidden Costs For One Person: $468.88
